Rudchester Garages

July 2023

The buildings were errected as cart sheds between 1855 and 1859, based on the old OS maps:

The garages are not shown on this or earlier OS maps. The road from the South, appears to have been more of the "drive" to Rudchester from Wylam

1859

By 1859, the garages are shown (in red) backing on to the road, which is much more like its current layout. The gardens have also been laid out in their current plan.

In theory, the cart sheds were changed to a 6-car garage in 1999 (see Planning Permission 1999). However, the doors are quite narrow and the door openings quite low, especially at the South end, so we mainly use them for storage and as a workshop. The doors were expertly replaced like-for-like in hardwood by Langley Furniture Works in 2022.

We are very fond of our Victorian postbox which is set into the wall of the garages - and use it at every possibile opportinuity!
