Roman Rudchester

Rudchester has grown from the Roman fort Vindobala and its vicus. The remains of the Fort and Mithraeum (1844) are covered, but the Giant's Grave (1766) is still visible.

We have an A3 photocopied map titled "Plan of Rudchester Fort's Excavations". I have not been able to find its source, or details of some of the excavations. It lists 9 dates from the discovery of the Giant's Grave in 1766 to the excavations for the water supply across the fort in 1989, repeated in 2002 and then in 2022 to renew the pipes.

The Society of Antiquaries of Newcastle upon Tyne was founded in 1813, and has publised a variety of articles about Rudchester in their journal, Archaeologia Aeliana. The contents are most easily searchable through the Archaeology Data Service website. I have found 11 articles so far which reference Rudchester or Vindobala:
