On 11th August 1905, Christian Hugh Septimus James mortgaged " the mansion house of Rudchester with its outbuildings, gardens and grounds and the several farms, plantations and closes of land containing together 290 acres [the whole of the land he purchased]...together constituting that part of the Rudchester estate which lies to the South of the Military Road"
to John Liddell of Sydmonton Court, Hampshire, Matthew Liddell of Stillingdon Hall, Yorkshire and Charles Liddell of Warwick Hall, Cumberland for £10,000 (about £1M at today's prices) at 4% interest (£400pa), with the first payment to be made on 11th August 1906.
£1,000 was repaid on 19th July 1922
£3,000 on 29th August 1923
£3,000 on 11th August 1937 and the remainder of
£3,000 to Etheldreda Ellison on 3rd April 1967, of 4 Albermale Wimbledon Parkside, London, SW19 by Tom James of Hawkwell, Stamfordham, with Stamp Duty of 2 Guineas (£2-10s-0).
There is a memorandum (page 4), that on 8th September 1953, a conveyance was made between Christian Wilfred James and Ethalreda Ellison to Victor Leslie Benson, of a 2-acre field (Ordinace Field No. 23).
