1983 Planning Permission

August 2021

This is a planning permission decision notice Ref 83/D/48 dated 7th June 1983 granted to Squadron Leader Tom James for "tipping of builders material to infill quarry on 0.55 hectares of land at Rudchester Manor Quarry, Heddon, as amended by letter and plan dated 27th April 1983".

It seems extraordinary today, given the site's location adjacent to the scheduled monument 1017533 of Rudchester Roman fort, associated civil setelment and a section of Hadrian's Wall and vallum from the A69 to the March Burn in Mile Castle 13, but Tom James was given permission to tip "inert builders' waste" for 2-years. There are varius conditions applied to the permission (a valid waste disposal licence, layers not exceding 2.5m, having regard to the final proposed contours of the site, cessation of tipping when 1m below the final anticipated levels, a scheme for landscaping and tree planting with maintainence and replacing of trees a necessary of 5-years, no burning at any time) which do not appear to have been followed, judging by the absence of trees or landscaping and the presence of rubble and other industrial waste on the surface.
